About Truman High School

School Description

Harry S Truman High School was opened in 1973 as a combined High School and Middle School. The original school physical plant was designed using the “Open School” concept.  “Open School” has different definitions, including open concept schools (classrooms without walls). This concept was the vision of school leaders at the time Harry S Truman High School was built.

After several years of operation using the “Open Schools” concept and a configuration as a combined senior/middle school, Taylor School District leaders decided to change Harry S Truman (HST) as a stand alone high school. In addition, district leaders began the process of installing walls within the building, creating individual classrooms that continued to be the current school configuration.

Harry S Truman High School’s student population is 1,697 students in grades nine through twelve, with most students residing within the Taylor School District’s enrollment boundaries. The Taylor School District and Harry S Truman High School have not participated in a school of choice program since the 2005-06 school year.

HST is a comprehensive academic high school providing educational programs in Art, Business, English, Industrial Technology, Junior ROTC, Living Skills, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, and World Languages. HST provides an extensive educational program for Physically and Otherwise Handicapped Individuals (POHI), serving approximately 15 students. The POHI program is a shared services program in conjunction with Wayne Regional Educational Services Agency.

Taylor Career and Technical Center provides approximately 300 HST students with Career and Technical Education educational options during the school day in either A.M. or P.M. Blocks of instruction.
