The Mission of Harry S Truman High School is to provide and maintain a safe, positive and productive educational environment (climate). HST will maintain high academic requirements necessary to prepare all students for a post-secondary education and life-long learning. We will promote understanding and respect for all members of a diverse global society through the involvement of the entire community including parents, students, and educators in a collaborative school environment. School Motto: Dream It! Believe It! Achieve It! Key Questions for Staff
What do we want students to know?
How will we know if they are learning?
What are we going to do if they are not learning?
What has changed at Harry S Truman High School from 10 years ago? (e.g., No longer one size fits all whole group instruction, standards-based learning that provides student opportunities based on interest, needs, and abilities.
Continue with the strategies developed during the 2007-08 school year (e.g., Shared Decision Making Team, MME Academy, Credit Recovery, Parent Advisory Group, and WorkKeys). Other ideas (e.g., Integrate Character Education into all curriculums, expand CTE choices aligned with the Career Readiness Certificate, develop a school-within-a-school (e.g., 9th grade academy, others), other strategies to personalize individual curriculums, Individual Education Plan for students to adjust curriculum as specified in the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

Provide a safe, clean environment for everyone
Decide on clear, high standards for student performance, focused on a coherent academic core that is the same for all students
Develop a sequential curriculum for academic core, matched to the standards, with end of course assessments that assess what has been learned in each of those courses
Include in the curriculum strands for students who are working below grade level in the core, so there is a clear path for them to catch up
Create incentives for all students to take these new tough courses and to work hard in them
Develop a school climate and organization that produces strong personal support for each student and a feeling on the part of that student that the adults in the schools believe that the student can and will succeed
Create features of the school organization, management and governance structure that communicate to every member of the school community the expectation that every student is expected to reach high standards, as well as what each member of the community will be held accountable for with respect to that goal
Develop a school culture that focuses relentlessly on results and on getting every student to the standards
Provide strong support for every staff member to acquire the professional skill and knowledge needed to succeed in his or her job
Build community services and supports for the students outside school, so that they are able to take full advantage of school
Help parents to support children in school
Develop a school leadership style that is inclusive, making everyone, including staff, students, and parents, feel they are welcome participants in the drive to improve results
